ABSTRACT

This case illustrates the potential for both possibility and peril within a team coaching engagement when an experienced executive coach, extensively trained and practiced in one-to-one coaching, as well as being a veteran corporate trainer, makes the transition to coaching within a wider organizational system for a six-month contract with a team. Richard had been working as an experienced and certified executive and organizational coach for ten years. Richard reached out to Karyn the next day for a telephone debrief of the retreat. The partner of the consultancy requested that Richard promptly return 50% of the prepaid coaching engagement fee, though reassured him that the organization still held Richard in high esteem as an executive coach who could continue one-to-one coaching with other leaders in the organization. Richard quickly drafted a six-month team coaching proposal and submitted it to the consultancy that was contracting him to do the executive coaching work with the client organization.
