ABSTRACT

The founder of a successful company appoints an executive coach for the new CEO due to differences emerging in terms of business strategy and approaches to organisational culture. As the coaching moves forward, conflicting agendas and priorities come to the fore, including a sense of misaligned values stemming from the coach. The coach commits to bringing new nondirective challenges to future coaching sessions. Twenty years ago Sarah opened a pop-up stall selling perfume, and had no idea it would grow so large. Toby was careful to state his professional commitments as a coach, highlighting his responsibilities to keep the conversations confidential, and to remain nondirective, non-judgemental, and challenging. Toby's desire to be transparent had so far led nowhere so it appeared, with Peter hiding his true priorities from Sarah who, in turn, was trying to influence the coaching process behind the curtains.
