ABSTRACT

An executive coach has been engaged by a CEO of a privately held business to work one-to-one with members of the executive team. The CEO has just taken over from her father and there is tension with legacy leaders and new members of the team (including the new CEO). The CEO and the coach have been acquaintances for several years and have gotten to know each other quite well following each other's careers. As the engagement continues, the coach sees significant dysfunction with the team and wonders if team coaching would be a better fit for the group. However, she has limited formal experience with this sort of work, even though she has 15 years’ experience as a CEO of her own organization where she worked through team conflict on a regular basis. Originally, the CEO stated to her executive team that she would not be coached by the same coach, but as her team culture starts to deteriorate, the CEO approaches the coach to be coached.
