ABSTRACT

The coaching client approached the coach for a six-session engagement focused on navigating away from a toxic work environment. Bracketing assumptions about what death means to people and to what extent it may be in the way of engaging in coaching was key in this scenario. Sitra felt drawn to Jack's approach, grounded in existential philosophy and positive psychology, due to its emphasis on endings as an inevitable part of living. Jack and Sitra hence decided to meet for a conversation to ascertain whether to enter a coaching relationship at this time. Jack and Sitra decided to enter a six-session coaching relationship with an understanding that, if Sitra's state of mind were to change during its course, or if Jack were to get a sense that Sitra may be in better hands with another practitioner, they would both be honest about whether to stop, pause, or refer.
