ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the metamorphosis of Second Generation writing over a period of thirty years, using my own oeuvre as a case study, focusing on the psychological, cultural and creative changes of the Second Generation as it ages, and the first generation dies. Among the topics covered are the inevitable diminishment of the rage that frequently animated Second Generation work, and the failures of both realism and fabulism or hyper-realism to render these experiences. And yet, despite these failures - or because of them - the work goes on.
