ABSTRACT

This chapter explores new angles on the concept of cultural development on a global scale. It offers a theoretical analysis of the contemporary approach to culture and innovation, as well as to the development of cities, with culture being a pivotal factor in the developmental processes. Cultural activism plays an important role in sustainable economic development and creates economic activities, entrepreneurship and jobs, adding to the attractiveness of cities and contributing to the development of tourism. A cultural ecosystem should not be treated as merely a segment of the economy, but rather as a system that contains the economy. It is essential to distinguish artists and professionals in the cultural sector, ensure access to their work, promote corporate responsibility and implement adequate support for cultural projects. Partnership between people from the culture and business fields is also important, together with systemic innovations and knowledge transfer. 'Tourism needs to be linked to this cultural ecosystem, by means of implementing cultural routes'.
