ABSTRACT

Korea ranks 7th for greenhouse gas emissions, and electricity produced from nuclear power plants is 4th following America, France, and Russia. Nuclear energy accounts for 30%, bituminous coal 38%, LNG 22%, and renewable energy 2.8% of energy production in 2014, representing an energy system based on fossil fuels. In primary energy, oil is 37%, bituminous coal 27.8%, nuclear energy 11.7%, and combined waterpower and new renewable energy 4.5% (KEEI, 2015). Electricity produced mainly from fossil resources causes a lot of social problems. The more greenhouse gas emissions increase, the more responsibility for climate changes grows. Atmospheric pollution caused by coal use increases, there is a high risk of nuclear accidents, and there are social conflicts related to the construction of nuclear waste disposal facilities.
