ABSTRACT

This first chapter of the book presents its points of departure, thereby first summarizing extant approaches. It then deals with three significant changes contributing to the complexity of the modern corporate governance landscape: (1) transnationalization, (2) regulatory changes and (3) the rise of scrutinization. The effects on corporate governance of these changes are then illustrated by three empirical cases. Against this background, there follows a brief presentation of the approach of the book both theoretically and in terms of its empirical foundations. Finally, the chapter summarizes the rest of the volume.
