ABSTRACT

This paper presents a novel concept of carcass design as an alternative to the existing carcass in unbonded flexible pipe. The conventional carcass made from a flexible metallic layer which has the potential of corrosion and weight issue as the main problems during installation operation. The “ball-and-socket” concept is made from glass epoxy material and with an interlocking design that made from several segment to form a single pipe length. The use of composite has its benefit in term of strength, stiffness and weight as compared with conventional carcass pipe. The results showed that “ball-and-socket” design has solved the second issue of having heavy weight while still maintaining adequate structural strength to hold the hydrostatic pressure.
