ABSTRACT

There are many studies that evaluate the effectiveness of different types of cool roof and roof insulation technologies. However, there is a lack of study that attempts to aid the decision-making on which technology to adopt. Building Information Modelling (BIM) provides stakeholders with a tool to support decision-making, but BIM itself is not able to perform the decision-making. The capability of BIM should be enhanced to enable it to perform decision-making by performing optimization of Building Information models, which can be realized by looking at buildings as dynamic systems that can be optimized. The paper demonstrates an approach to reduce CO2 emission and improve the thermal comfort level of residential buildings in Malaysia by representing the roof design as a BIM-based dynamic system.
