ABSTRACT

This chapter examines technological contexts supporting the growth of local, geographically bound, culturally appropriate, community sustainability practices derived from the ethos informing the annual Burning Man event. We examine the Burning Man Project’s outreach program known as the Burning Man Regional Network, and the ways in which local collaboration, action, and innovation are supported through human networks leveraging older digital technologies. While human-computer interaction research is often focused on the viability of new product development, this chapter reflects on social changes supported by older digital communication tools put into the service of human communities.
