ABSTRACT

In recent decades, organizations referred to as non-profit organizations or non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have played a growing role in delivering public services, worldwide, especially at subnational levels of government. This chapter discusses the role of women as leaders in the non-profit world, with a particular focus on female leaders in international non-governmental organizations (INGOs). The information in the chapter is from a study conducted by the author in 2014 of the 371 INGOs associated with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO).
