ABSTRACT
There is wide variation across the 48 countries in the Sub Sahara Africa (SSA) region regarding the status of women across political, social and economic domains. This chapter focuses on women in the public sphere in the region and its countries. It looks at the social and economic context for women governing in the region, the factors that shape women’s participation in the public sphere and the constraints on women’s efforts to achieve equality with men.
