ABSTRACT
In a chapter specifically about the theoretical basis of environmental ethics, in a book aimed at promoting informed reflection on, and promotion of, morally defensible behavioural change, it is necessary first to explain terms like ‘ethics’ and ‘morals’. In some philosophical traditions, ‘morals’ (Moralis), refers to the principles that distinguish ‘right’ from ‘wrong’ that exist independent of the agent. ‘Ethics’ (Ethikos) by contrast refers to the character of the subject. However, as discussed later, these two are intimately connected, and the terms are used interchangeably in this book.
