ABSTRACT

Gender equity is important. It is a major principal advocated by the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC). Despite attention to this issue, women are still under-represented in business leadership and business faculties. The issue is related to hiring practices in business schools. Management-area faculty job announcements often look for candidates with publications in top-tier journals. Using the articles in four top management journals of 2014 and 2015, this chapter demonstrates how a seemingly gender-neutral policy favours males over females. To move towards gender equity, as suggested by UNGC Principle 6, there should be less emphasis on top-tier publications in faculty employment decisions. Longer-term, gender equality in academia and in business would benefit from more female professors and administrators in management education. The chapter concludes with some recommendations for making this a reality.
