ABSTRACT

Farm animal welfare is now recognized as an important business issue for companies in the food industry. As has been discussed by the various authors in this volume, a variety of factors have driven this change, including the 2013 European horsemeat scandal, food scares, tightening regulatory requirements on animal welfare and on food safety and quality, investor concerns about how food companies are managing animal welfare and other risks in their supply chains, consumer interest in issues such as food quality and safety, provenance and traceability, and public concerns about the welfare of animals in food supply chains.
