ABSTRACT

Longform has fantastic podcasts featuring celebrated non-fiction writers, many of them working in features or its grown-up cousin, literary journalism. ‘Journalism no longer belongs to the person who can afford a press or even can convince somebody to run their story. In March 2012, former New York Times Magazine culture editor Adam Sternbergh launched a spontaneous series of tweets advising freelancers about how to pitch better—valuable edicts from the top of the magazine publishing industry. Local businesses and sporting clubs are on the pavement inflating balloons that, tied to strollers or toddlers’ wrists, decorate the air. A parade is coming and as onlookers gather, one could mistake the annual Weerama Festival for the locals’ merriment at the Member for Lalor’s latest political victory. The visit had seemingly been a grand success, but before long the Albert & Logan News, a News Limited local paper, posted a story online about a student throwing a sandwich at the prime minister.
