ABSTRACT

This chapter examines research on the education of young children for life in democratic society. I highlight three areas of research: research that aims to position children as active citizens in their classrooms and local communities, research that examines specific methods for advancing civic learning in early childhood, and research on content area literacy in social studies. I point to the promises and challenges of each of these lines of work and call for the extension and deepening of research on democratic education in early childhood.
