ABSTRACT
Early parenting education can touch on the importance of music for young children. The educator can ask group members why babies cry, as they pass a doll from person to person, imagining it to be a crying baby. Emotional and relationship learning is mediated through parents’ facial expressions when talking to the baby, through singing, nursery rhymes and music, through reading and holding and stroking. The more the baby and young child hear about emotions, the better is likely to be their understanding of the rich emotional life a human being can experience. A baby needs to learn about the range of emotions that he can experience and what these emotions ‘feel’ like, ‘sound’ like and ‘look’ like. Group members need to understand the importance of interacting with their baby when he is in a receptive state – calm and attentive – rather than always treating such occasions as an opportunity to get on with household chores or other business.
