ABSTRACT
Trying to summarise current educational policy and practice in relation to dyslexia is complex as it involves a number of factors and the interaction between them. These include:
1 current overall education policy and practice particularly in relation to the teaching of reading and assessment and monitoring of basic educational attainments;
2 current special educational needs (SEN) policy and practice particularly in relation to the identification and support of children with specific learning difficulties through out their school career;
3 current initial and in-service professional development of teachers particularly in relation to reading and specific learning difficulties;
4 the level and nature of difficulty posed by a particular language in relation to reading and writing it;
5 the role of voluntary organisations in shaping or re-acting to educational policy and practice.
