ABSTRACT

Reprinted in Eminent Persons: Biographies reprinted from The Times, Vol. I, 1870–1875 (1892), 8–11. The obituary notice (The Times, 11 June, 9) is reprinted also, pp. 12–15. ‘The death of Charles Dickens found The Times quite unready with a biographical sketch. Mr Edward Walford, author of The County Families, wrote the notice for The Times between midnight and four in the morning, with messengers at his elbow all the time to carry the MS. to the printer. Mr Walford has written the majority of the long obituary articles for The Times since 1868’ (Joseph Hatton, Journalistic London (1882), 80–1). ‘Thomas Chenery (1826–84) was Editor of The Times from 1877 until his death.’
