ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the introduction and background of bandwidth reservation service in high-performance networks (HPNs) for big data transfer along with the challenges. It shows one of our proposed bandwidth scheduling algorithms with illustration through simple examples for easy comprehension. When a user would like to transfer data from a source end-site to a destination end-site using the bandwidth reservation service, he/she needs to create a bandwidth reservation request (BRR) and then send it to the HPNs. Bandwidth scheduling algorithms can be categorized into two groups: instant scheduling algorithm, which schedules one single BRR at a time and periodical scheduling algorithm, which schedules multiple BRRs accumulated within a time period at a time. The most widely used bandwidth reservation service within the global research and networking community is provided by Energy Sciences Network, where the On-demand secure circuits and advance reservation system software is deployed with multidomain, high-bandwidth virtual circuits.
