ABSTRACT

Nature of Egyptian theology We have dealt in some detail with man’s relationship to God, because in our view this is the heart of Egyptian religion, and hitherto seems to have received less attention than it deserves. Nevertheless the three preceding chapters have by no means exhausted our theme. For example, we have only touched upon the question of (moral) free will. We learned that man was given the opportunity of transgressing the word of God and of allowing his heart (thought to be the seat of the will) to lead him into evil. We have also discovered that God himself may deny man the grace of true insight and may inspire him to negative actions. Thus free will and determinism coexist.
