ABSTRACT
This chapter provides an overview of the different musical influences that have come to shape Hispanic or Latino/a music and music making in the United States. Students will learn about the main musical genres involved and the regional and cultural differences among different communities. They will also have a better understanding of the interconnections and ongoing cross-pollination that many of these musical environments have had with one another, as well as with neighboring Anglo-American and African-American communities.
