ABSTRACT

In Chapter 1 I explored the way in which the two lines of force, ascent and descent, depend on each other. Regularity and repetition, the line of descent, holds things the same, while creative lines of flight that open up new modes of thought and ways of being, or lines of ascent, are at one and the same time necessary for life, sometimes dangerous, and always subject to being reincorporated back into lines of descent. In this chapter I will extend my analysis of the concept and practice of listening in terms of these two lines of force.
