ABSTRACT

This Chapter presents actions that higher education e-tutors can take to effectively communicate with learners and monitor their progress, thereby exhibiting emotional intelligence and emotionally competent traits, and generating positive relationships with and between learners. It firstly considers how this can be achieved at an individual level, which is supported by an analysis of two prominent psychological constructs – Transactional Analysis and Countertransference. The Chapter then discusses course level strategies to support learners and understand the emotional state of all participants within online learning environments. Further, two questionnaires are outlined, modified versions of the course experience questionnaire and revised study process questionnaire, which tutors could use to elicit learner perceptions of their practices within online and blended learning environments.
