ABSTRACT

This chapter provides some thoughts to stimulate individual development planning to develop junior staff and their organisations culture. High-profile enquiry reports often highlight the lack of basic skills in career project management as causal links for project failure. Failures in project management skills appear high on the list of evidence presented by academic research into the early warning signs of impending project failure. A career in project management presents people with a wide range of opportunities to fulfil their potential to a personal level and at a pace of their choosing. The breadth and depth of experience, skills and technical knowledge available offers the individual a choice of excitement, challenge or stability in a career path tailored to their personal aspirations and ability. Generic project management in a new domain places greater reliance on domain expertise within the team, and the managerial ability to motivate, lead and inspire.
