ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how the designers used Sustainability Checklist and evaluation mechanism of the Rhizome Approach as the starting point to develop the Holistic Sustainability System. The Rhizome Approach builds on learning from existing sustainability design approaches and tools. The institutional structure within which the designer works – business/enterprise/company – needs to support sustainable design. The chapter also discusses how the company evolves from looking at sustainability as a necessary compliance formality to a potential business edge over its sustainability journey. It explores how designers shortlisted communicative and soft-regulation instruments – and labeling in particular – to support and encourage the use and operationalization of Rhizome Approach. Most existing sustainability labeling schemes seem to focus on environmental or social aspects, with an explicit contradiction between the two foci at times. The labeling scheme comprised three basic steps: standard-setting, certification, and labeling.
