ABSTRACT
Besides the elastic stress field (stress intensity factor) approach there is another method that can be used in LEFM, the energy balance approach mentioned in sections 1.4 and 1.5 of chapter 1. In section 4.2 the equations of energy balance and instability will be given, together with the definition of the energy release rate, G, which is the parameter controlling fracture.
