ABSTRACT
Some fundamental equations of fracture mechanics are derived in this chapter from the principle of conservation of energy. This approach of deriving the fracture mechanics equations from the energy conservation laws was first proposed by Griffith (1921, 1924), who is often considered the father of modern fracture mechanics.
