ABSTRACT

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.16 Wireless Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN) standard is emerging as a highly promising technology for the future generation of broadband wireless access. This chapter presents the sleep mode in the Point-to-multipoint (PMP) working mode in the IEEE 802.16e WirelessMAN and perform an extensive analysis of the specified energy-saving scheme in terms of energy consumption and packet delay. It discusses the illustrative examples to shows the interactions between the key parameters and the aforementioned metrics. The chapter focuses on the energy management mechanism in IEEE 802.16e Mobile Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access. It introduces physical layer and media access control layer fundamentals and explains the orthogonal frequency division multiple access modulation scheme. The chapter examines the frame structure and basics of the PMP and mesh modes and explores the sleep mode and analyzes the performance of the power-saving mechanism. It proposes energy consumption by considering both the downlink and uplink frames.
