This chapter provides an overview of freedom of religion and belief in England. It focuses on the established church and the extent to which religious freedom and manifestation of belief are protected in comparison to secular France. It looks at religious freedom before and after the Human Rights Act 1998 and considers the impact of the Human Rights Act on religious freedom in the context of schools. The chapter provides an analysis of judicial approaches to manifestation of belief and examines the case law in the context of schools. It then discusses the Equality Act 2010 and non-discrimination with a specific focus on employment cases. The chapter concludes by considering the extent to which the established church is compatible with religious freedom.
