ABSTRACT
It has been held by some linguists that every statement contains as minimal elements a topic, or 'theme', about which the statement is made, and a 'predicate' or communication about the theme. In 'the new shoes which I'm wearing hurt me', the words 'hurt me' constitute the predicate stated about the theme 'the new shoes which I'm wearing'.
