Based on decades of hands-on experience at the grassroots level in a number of Latin American countries—most recently assisting in finalizing the peace treaty between the FARC and the government of Colombia (at the behest of both parties)—Bueno de Faria provides a rich discussion that examines three areas that impact the lives of millions of Latin Americans. Top of the list is environmental degradation, which has not only local and regional effects but also global effects, considering that the Amazon region is “like the lungs of the earth.” Next comes poverty and corruption, which seem to go hand-in-hand. He looks at the role that the media play in this regard and highlights areas that require greater cooperation from civil society, governments and multilateral bodies alike to redress the negative humanitarian effects faced by Latin Americans across the region.
