ABSTRACT

Environmental education as environmental history is a much broader and more readily acceptable working definition for history teachers. Teaching environmental education through the foundation subject may limit opportunities for understanding where students' subject achievement levels vary greatly. There are schools where it is possible to enter a room where mathematics is taught and not know it until the subject is announced. Design and Technology can demonstrate that there are opportunities for taking action to improve or conserve environments. Unfortunately the potential in design and technology for pupils to evaluate and improve environments may not be realised because of the proposed changes to the statutory Technology National Curriculum. Some possibilities for developing environmental themes may be considered under the main aspects of geography to be included in the National Curriculum interpretation of the subject. The careful use of non-renewable resources should be practiced as part of technological activities.
