ABSTRACT

Visualization is the process by which a designer develops a mental image of a design concept. The design situation is visualized in light, and several lighting concepts that can serve to guide this process are discussed in this chapter. The design concept is built up from observation-based experience, which involves both understanding how the attributes associated with elements in the field of view are perceived, and how these may be brought together to achieve a lighting design concept for an architectural space. The ability to visualize in this way is the defining skill of a lighting designer.
