ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that society was but a large group and that the same theoretical understanding used in group relations learning—where both small and large group dynamics were the subject of study in temporary institutions—could also be applied to the study of society. It may also shift the people focus from viewing the conflict as one regarding a group of evil terrorists to an understanding that the heart of the conflict lies in a cultural clash between Western and Muslim societies. Barack Obama's ability to resist massive projections also enables him to take up a leadership role that seeks to develop a relationship where both the West and Muslims can see each other as complete human beings who are capable of both goodness and badness. Such leadership has provided an opportunity for learning where both sides can work together across the boundary to develop a new understanding that takes account of the need for a pluralistic world community.
