ABSTRACT

A surgical incision of the perineum used to expedite birth. Reasons include instrumental birth, breech, shoulder dystocia if internal manoeuvres are used, female genital mutilation (FGM) and fetal distress. Little evidence supports routine episiotomy for premature births or previous third- or fourth-degree tears.
