Such cases perhaps are rather special. The main criterion, from Bergson’s point of view, would be a practical one: is intelligence or instinct of greater advantage to its possessor-or perhaps to the species to which its possessor belongs, since Bergson, as we have seen before and shall see again, is not always as interested in the individual as we might think he should be?
