ABSTRACT

The aims of this chapter on enhancing prospects for sustainable aquaculture development are to:

Present and critically evaluate a toolbox of approaches, drawing on practical examples and published accounts that could be deployed to support and foster widespread adoption of sustainable aquaculture practices;

Assess approaches to stakeholder, institutional and market assessment in support of equitable and appropriate aquaculture development and aquatic resources management;

Critically review application of participatory action planning, focusing on peri-urban wetland management in West Bengal, India for facilitating joint assessment and decision-making;

Describe the STEPS (Social, Technical, Environmental, Political and Sustainability) approach to testing feasibility with stakeholders;

Review calls for consensus-based aquaculture sector planning and development and assess the potential of the stakeholder Delphi approach for consensus-building and testing the strength of agreement;

Highlight promising approaches to joint financial and economic appraisals of aquaculture practices and review prospects for enhanced assessments of environmental impacts with stakeholders.
