ABSTRACT

However, there is no longer an alternative – the more modest objective to be satisfied with control and elimination is not acceptable: the eradication of polio is a question of utmost importance for WHO's capacity and legitimacy, besides the worthy goal of eradicating one of the most serious illnesses affecting the health and life of populations in the developing world. The eradication programme has seen impressive progress in the fight against polio. The programme benefits from having specific targets with specific indicators of success. The public-private partnership (PPP) joining WHO, UNICEF, the World Bank, the industry, research centres, foundations and the key role of Rotary International with governments has effectively contributed to the current results. However, the programme has met a major obstacle in the recent surge of cVDPV in a few countries; this is being dealt with by measures taken under the Polio Eradication and Endgame Strategic Plan 2013-2018.
