ABSTRACT

The history of art therapy as a profession in Iceland spans about four decades. The Icelandic Art Therapy Association, along with its regulations and code of ethics, was formed in 1998. They are free, however, to open a private practice without any restriction from the government. The children received art educational therapy (AET), whereby the learning of school subjects is integrated into art therapy with the aim of facilitating emotional well-being and coursework learning. The chapter presents part of the case study of one of the children, Lisa, in relation to memory drawing. When she began therapy, Lisa was pale and withdrawn, spoke in a low, breathless voice; her movements were unsure and hesitant. Lisa found learning poetry by heart difficult. The Child Behaviour Checklist completed by Lisa’s mother before the initiation of AET and after its completion indicated that Lisa complained less frequently about physical pain, demonstrated less anxiety, and was more social following therapy.
