ABSTRACT

An easy exercise to reinforce the importance of environmental sustainability is for the decision maker to reflect on whether his or her children would be satisfied with the decisions made today related to the use of natural resources. It is not only managers of firms that must incorporate environmental sustainability in their decision-making process. The United States Environmental Protection Agency defines environmental sustainability as the acknowledgment that everything that is required for long-term sustainability of humanity and the earth is either directly or indirectly related to the natural environment. From a natural environment perspective, the tragedy of the commons will predict that the eventual consumption of all-natural resources and the ineffective disposal of certain resources will occur globally due to the lack of uniform control over its use. While designed to be both a sustainable and bountiful source of food, the tragedy of the commons has had a significant impact on ability of the oceans to thrive in the future.
