ABSTRACT

This chapter examines young people’s perspectives of the future of Europe and the Spanish role in a united Europe in the future. The Spanish population joined the European Union (EU) with enthusiasm and hope because it assumed that the young Spanish democracy would be accepted as an equal member after 40 years of dictatorship. The active role that Spain plays in the building of a common European project shows its commitment to the promotion of the European identity by considering the EU as the natural framework of political and economic development of the country. The world economic crisis has also influenced most young people’s lives, revealing structural failures that entail serious consequences, such as an increased unemployment rate in young people. Although young people in most European countries have increased their number of qualifications and level of education, they have also been involved in more instability and job insecurity.
