ABSTRACT

Why is the research on the European social security coordination of relevance for the understanding of the nexus between intra-European mobility and European social security? How does a comparative analysis of institutional regulations of access to and portability of social security rights and the related mobile EU citizens’ experiences contribute to a better understanding of the Europeanization of social citizenship? And why is the idea of equal treatment of mobile EU citizens in terms of access to social security rights as contested as it is? To address these and related questions, this introductory chapter provides the conceptual and methodological milestones that inform the chapters of this volume.
