ABSTRACT

The creative process is analogous to a hero's journey, in which a designer delves deep into the unknown to discover solutions that are applicable to others. Every professional designer immediately knows what they would do differently once they see a vehicle being used in public. Macro technological and societal trends are shifting nearly every assumption of how vehicle manufacturers will maintain and generate profits moving forward. One can hardly remember what life was like before the age of the internet. If connectivity and the internet have radically changed the way people share information and data, zero emissions technology has the potential for a similar impact on the architecture of vehicles. At present, the two main areas for investigation involve hydrogen fuel powering combustion engines, and battery-powered systems propelling electric motors. Vehicle autonomy, or the self-driving car, may represent one of the most pivotal shifts in mobility since the inception of personal automotive transport.
