ABSTRACT

A need to rely upon permanent benefits from the workers compensation corporation comes with its own problems, including its effect upon the self-esteem of the former worker. After an initial period of hospitalization and surgery, and sometimes physical therapy, many individuals try to return to work in the same field, without benefit of therapy. The man who was electrocuted while he was speaking on the phone at his workplace began treatment in art therapy years after he had been injured. He had participated in verbal psychotherapy. In therapy, the client talked about having nightmares of images of body parts, about an inability to develop healthful relationships, and about an increasing fear of engaging in any social activity. Most clients require the provision of on-going therapy to develop coping mechanisms and to accept limitations upon activity and changes in life goals.
