ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a preliminary way to answer some of the questions with respect to Ghana. These questions are how has the traditional social structure stood up to the changes, what new groups have emerged, what are their characteristics, and what part do they play in this period of immense social transformation? The system of indirect rule which the British established permitted a gradual transformation. From 1844, when the notorious Bond was signed between the chiefs of southern Ghana and the British, the social structure began to change by the turn of the century most of what is Ghana had become a British colony. The sub-culture of the intelligentsia must be viewed also as a function of role expectations of the non-elite. Not to conform to certain social expectations and use certain elite symbols was to lose face with friends and relatives.
