ABSTRACT

In 2008, victimology turned 60 years old! Th e birth of this exciting branch of criminology is usually traced to the 1948 publication of Hans von Hentig’s seminal work, Th e Criminal and His Victim [see Fattah, 1967a&b]. As one of the oldest, perhaps the oldest, pioneers in victimology [Viano, 1976] still alive, having published articles pertaining to this nascent discipline as early as 1966 [Fattah, 1966] and having devoted a large part of my scholarly output during the past 40 years to this young discipline, I believe the best contribution I can make to this victimology handbook is to revisit the issues I raised over the years, the questions I asked, and the criticisms I made, and to trace the evolution of victimology in the last half century.
