ABSTRACT

Sport and exercise psychologists have shown continued interest in examining each of the domains of emotional regulation and imagery as steps in the formulation of strategies to support the enhancement of both performance and activity engagement in athletes and exercisers. Existing literature reinforces the importance of the cognitive processing elements of both emotional regulation and imagery use and ability. Previous research in imagery has also consistently identified sport imagery as an important psychological intervention and training strategy, within which emotional regulation can be effectively incorporated. The goal of this chapter is to consider the literature that has endeavoured to align the processing elements of emotion and imagery, examine research and interventions that have utilised both variables as assessment or treatment foci, and to present an imagery treatment scenario that is designed to regulate emotional aspects of athletic performance.
